Studio Diary Part 2... And
Then There Were Guitars Well it took me little longer than expected to update the diary but here we go. Day 2 we went in made a few tweaks to the drums and Paul was ready to track. Dude was seriously killing his drums. Britt and I looked at each other at the end of Bruise and both went” what the fuck, that’s not right is it?” It was absolutely absurd and I mean that in the best possible way. By the end of the night 3 songs were finished. Every one was spent so we headed home and we were back at it the next day. Another 3 songs and more drums were killed. Next up…guitars. Tons of guitars. We rolled into the Groove Room, set up the amps (Davy’s 67 Plexi, my Orange and my Fender Bassman) and started to dial them in. After dialing for a while we then added the MK3 secret weapon and when we finished that shit was L-O-U-D, I mean arena loud and it sounded amazing if I do say so myself. Good thing I was tracking in the control room. After it was all said and done 2 days later I had tracked all the rhythm guitars and let me tell you there are a lot of them. Lots of layers and the songs are sounding huge. 4am rolls around again and everyone is drained but definitely psyched as to how these songs are coming out. Check out some pictures from the studio here Till next time...joel Studio Diary Part 1... Drums,
Drums and More Drums Well here we are day one in the studio at the Groove Room and it's just what you'd expect; loading-in, setting up, listening to references and getting tones. Lots and lots of tones. Started at 4pm and finished around 2:30am. Not a moment was wasted as Davy Vain (yes he's behind the console once again) got down to business and got the drums happening in a big way; huge and up front. Next Britt gets his rig going and holy shit, monster bass tone. Then we setup my scratch guitar, get some headphone mixes, do a couple of takes to make sure everything and everybody is all good. Just a little more tweaking and the drums will be ready to go. Got a lot accomplished tonight and I think everyone is feeling good about the session. Oh yeah, next time you see Paul ask him if he wants a Red Bull... Now let's do this thing...joel P.S. I'll post up some pictures later in the week... 1/2/09

Blog First of all I'd like to welcome everyone to the (new!?) web site of Medieval Knievel. It's been a long time coming but we finally got things going out here on the web. Just like many things, the web site is a work in progress. You'll notice things change from time to time and content come and go (mostly come). The idea is to keep the site fresh, up-to-date and interesting for all of you who stop by. So take some time and have a look around. Next up...last week's rock 'n roll. Started off at the Oakland arena last Wednesday at the Oasis show. They always deliver and they did again. Let's face it Oasis is Oasis, they don't have a ton of energy onstage and they don't run around like madmen. They don't need to, their songs are great, enough said. Ryan Adams killed it as the opening act. Next night back to the Oakland area for the mighty AC/DC. Let's just say they blew the roof off of the place! After 30 plus years they are still kicking major ass. Angus is still all over the place and Malcolm just destroys the rhythm guitar. Being a guitar player it blows me away how much finesse those two play with. Next time you're watching them check out their right hands. Absolute masters. Brian sounded way better than I expected but you could tell by the end his voice was getting tired. The crowd was on their feet from start to finish loving every single minute. Saturday Erin and I headed down to the House of Blues in Anaheim to see Tesla. A huge thanks to Dave Rude for hooking us up for the show. I've known Dave for a few years now and let me tell you the only thing that has changed about him since joined Tesla is his guitar playing. Dude was great and now he's friggin' incredible! HOB was sold out and Tesla CRUSHED as usual. They played some new songs and all the hits you know and love. Crowd went nuts. Got a chance to go backstage and meet everyone and they were all super cool. One quick thing before I get out of here. As you know Smells Like California was featured on Californication last night and when our song came on...the feeling was unreal. I am extremely proud of what Britt, Paul and I create as Medieval Knievel. Britt, thanks for lining it up and to Nora Felder thanks for making it all happen. talk to you soon...joel Transmissions from the Medieval Knievel Mothership... Britt’s
Blog Also if you get a chance, check out the new Jim Bash video, Corvette Drummer. My dad’s 84’ vette makes a cameo as do I yelling at bash from my jeep. Dan Halen put it all together.(he films all our stuff , takes all our pictures, goes on all our trips and even sings back up on Smells like California. The video for Smells Like California. was filmed by Danny at Hiroshi’s club Fat City in San Francisco. Actually Tony owns the Club. Hard to believe our first show was at Fat City almost a year ago in October 2007. Well I’m off to meet Paul, Joel, and Dan Halen at the Oasis show in Oakland! Good
Night! |
